5. Detailed View of the Heating System

Flagstones were placed on top of columns, and the floor was laid on these. The weight of the flooring was thus optimally distributed. Above this, on the side of the wall you can see an orange hollow tile through which the heated air flowed upwards. The advent of the heating season in such a system required a large quantity of wood, and it took several days until the desired temperature was reached. Thereafter, only a small quantity was required to keep the temperature up, in similar fashion to later tiled stoves. None the less, it was only possible to heat a few rooms in a villa in this way. The largest heating system is to found at the bath, which we will visit later.
