17. The Hot Bath (Caldarium)

You are looking at the heating system for the hot bath (caldarium) in front of you. Since the room was relatively small, a very high temperature could probably be attained.
The bath was not only for purposes of health, but above all in Roman cities, it was a social meeting place. The importance of this institution, even at a Villa, is shown by the large heating system whose operation required a very large amount of labour and wood to burn.
